Triathlete Profile: Nathan Buschkuehl

Nathan is a 21 year old Professional Triathlete training in Victoria's Mornington Peninsula. Usually traveling to Europe over winter for training, Nathan stayed home this year to really work on his run and swim. Training under the guidance of 7 x Australian Triathlon Champion Stephen Foster, he has his sights set on big performances in this upcoming domestic season.

Nathan has competed in the Triathlon every year at YMMF, making this his fourth year in a row. This year Nathan is competing in the Standard distance. We caught up with Nathan to find out about his triathlon story and his history at YMMF.

How did you get involved in triathlon?

I began swimming lessons in school and was also doing little athletics at the time. My dad began triathlon 10 years ago and this influenced my decision to take up riding and subsequently give triathlon a go. I quickly developed a passion for the sport and its challenges and haven't looked back since!
How do you prepare for YMMF?

I'll prepare for Yarrawonga by doing some work on my Fuji Norcom TT bike. With this race being non-drafting it's important for me to spend some more time in the time trials bars while out on the road and less time trying to hang onto a bunch. I'll also be doing some hard running off the bike and will make sure I get out in the bay for a few open water sessions.
Do you have any specific goals for the festival? What about the rest of the season?

After finishing 2nd in last year's YMMF triathlon race I'd love to go one better this time round.
My goals for this season include: Achieving the National Talent Academy TT standards for a 22 year old, top 3 in the national Olympic Distance/Sprint Under 23 champs and Mooloolaba Continental Cup.

What is it about YMMF that keeps you coming back?

Triathlon Victoria always put on a great show in Yarrawonga that keeps me coming back year after year. The course provides a great opportunity for me to test my fitness and see where I'm at prior to the new-year. The out and back bike and multi-lap run courses provide the potential for fast times and with multiple events on offer it's a must do for all those triathletes out there!
