YMMF - A Family Event

One of the great things about YMMF is that it truly is an event the whole family can enjoy. With a range of events, that includes a kids duathlon, 5 km fun run and races up to the standard (Olympic) distance triathlon - all abilities and ages are catered for, providing the opportunity for participation for the entire family. We caught up with returning participants, the McCullough and Rowland families, to find out why their whole families participate in YMMF.

Why do you get your whole family involved in YMMF?

McCullough’s: To take advantage of a fun weekend away and "test the waters "for the first tri of the season.

Rowland’s: Yarrawonga Mulwala is a great holiday destination, in October it's just the ticket for a family weekend away in the sunshine. We Rowland's do love our 'getaway' triathlons, and this one is picturesque, challenging and has a very relaxed atmosphere. The event has something for all the family. My two children will compete in the Kids Duathlon on the Saturday, my wife the 5km fun run (not that she knows yet) and myself in the Standard triathlon on Sunday morning. The children get a real sense of accomplishment running down the finishers shoot and receiving their medal.

Is YMMF a once off annual event for your family or has your family grown up consistently competing in Multisport?

McCullough’s: The kids got me into triathlon and SBRG PERFORMANCE tri club promotes all squad members to attend and make it an annual trip away.

Rowland’s: As a family this will be our second YMMF, and my third. We do like to combine a multisport event with a holiday. We’ve participated in previous destinations around Victoria and interstate. YMMF is the favourite- and easy getaway from Melbourne, great weather and Tri Vic run a great event

How do you keep yourselves entertained on the drive up from Melbourne?

McCullough’s: Triathlon magazines and books. Also hoping and praying the bikes make it to the race in 1 piece on the roof racks!!!!!

Rowland’s: Are we there yet?? We usually drive up Friday afternoon to arrive for dinner, let's say technology plays a good hand in keeping the troops entertained.

Do you have a family ‘’pump-up” routine before each of you race?

McCullough’s: The kids usually "pump out" the beats on the car stereo for inspiration.

Rowland’s: There is  always a little banter around who is the faster runner or biker in the family,  which gets the adrenalin pumping.

Do you have any other activities planned for the family while you’re in Yarrawonga?

Rowland’s: The Lake Mulwala Foreshore is a good spot to relax, playground and skatepark to keep the children entertained, we will also explore the main street of Yarrawonga, on the lookout for a good coffee and post race refuel.

So, make a holiday of it! Get your family up to Yarrawonga for a weekend of fun, fitness and sunshine, and cheer each other on (or beat them across the finish line)!
