World of support for YMMF

It will again be the race that stops the community.  A world qualifier held over two states featuring an iconic bridge run and a Lake Mulwala hugging course that will attract competitors from all over Australia.

But it simply would not happen without the support of the event’s major sponsors; Yarrawonga Mulwala Tourism and Business (YMTB), the Mulwala Water Ski Club, McDonalds Yarrawonga and now Federation Council.

YMTB started the event seven years ago with Triathlon Victoria and in 2016 Sacred Heart School’s Splash and Dash Committee took over the event with the support of Mulwala Water Ski Club.

The triathlon part of festival now takes place on the Saturday afternoon from the Mulwala Water Ski Club and the usual Splash and Dash fun runs will resume their normal format on Sunday morning on the Yarrawonga Foreshore.

The Sunday fun runs are supported by major sponsor McDonalds Yarrawonga and will again feature a corporate challenge that will be raising funds for the local hospital as part of the Yarrawonga Health’s new Helping Hands initiative.

Sacred Heart School’s Splash and Dash Committee will for the third time run the festival as a fundraising community event.

Yarrawonga Mulwala Tourism Executive Officer Noel Wright is impressed with the progress of the event and is looking forward to this year’s event growing.

“The event is in its sixth year and attracts many athletes from all over Australia injecting more than $1.3 million into the local economy,” Noel Wright said.

“Having the Splash and Dash Committee involved provides an opportunity for the community to stamp their mark on this fantastic event which we want to keep here for years to come.”

With the support of the Mulwala Water Ski Club the event village has been shifted to the Ski Club harbour which features entertainment and an even bigger carnival atmosphere.

Mulwala Water Ski Club Chief Executive Officer Peter Duncan said the club has been proud to be associated with such a great event over the last several years and heaped praise on the new committee and their initiatives.

“This event brings a great economic benefit to the community and I congratulate the Splash and Dash committee who have worked extremely hard to grow this event,” Peter Duncan said.

Federation Council Mayor Pat Bourke said the council was proud to sponsor the festival.

"Sport plays a huge part in the lives of our residents, and as such, council is proud to sponsor the multisport event," Mayor Bourke said.

"With the opportunities sport provides, it undoubtedly sets strong foundations for teamwork, courage, inclusiveness, and leadership, and I really look forward to seeing everyone involved and congratulating them on the many successes that are sure to result during the two day event.

“By supporting the multisport festival it also provides council, our residents, fellow sponsors and local businesses with the opportunity to showcase the beautiful region that is Yarrawonga Mulwala."

The popular Yarrawonga Mulwala Multisport Festival (YMMF) has again won the rights to be a qualifying event for the 2018 ITU World Triathlon Series Grand Final and World Championships to be held in Lausanne, Switzerland next year.

Multisport committee member Jared Loughnan said the qualification was a significant win for YMMF as it builds to be the best regional triathlon in Australia.

Being a qualifying event for the Worlds Championships is great for the area,” Jared said.

“The world championships were held on the Gold Coast last month and this has raised the profile of our event.

“Added to the world qualifier we will again be part of Triathlon Victoria’s State Series which also attracts many triathletes from Melbourne and surrounds.”

This year’s event will be held on October 20 and 21 with the triathlon events being held on the Saturday and the Foreshore Family Run Runs and Yarrawonga Health’s Corporate Challenge being held on the Sunday morning.

World qualifier for Multisport

The popular Yarrawonga Mulwala Multisport Festival (YMMF) has won the rights to be a qualifying event for the 2019 ITU World Triathlon Series Grand Final and World Championships to be held in Lausanne, Switzerland in August/September 2019.

Multisport committee member Jared Loughnan said the qualification was a significant win for YMMF as it builds to be the best regional triathlon in Australia.

“The event continues to grow its reputation as an ideal triathlon for athletes wanting to get their qualifying points in early,” Jared said.

“This year we will again hold the event over two states including an iconic bridge run and a Lake Mulwala hugging course that was aimed at attracting competitors from all over Australia and even the world.

Being a qualifying event for the Worlds is great for the area attracting athletes from all over Australia.

"Federation Council have recognised this and have come on board as major race supporter and as a result the sprint distance will be called the Federation Council Sprint Distance Triathlon

“The YMMF will be the only sprint qualifying event in Victoria this side of Christmas and it will likely be seen as a great race to get in and get early status.

“Triathlon is a Commonwealth Games sport and this announcement confirms that Yarrawonga should also be considered as a host destination for Triathlon should the bold Victorian regional bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games proceed.”

Mr Loughnan said the event now in its seventh year attracts close to 800 athletes from all over Australia injecting more than $1.3 million into the local economy.

Yarrawonga Mulwala Tourism and Business Executive Noel Wright said a major triathlon was a perfect fit for the towns.

“We have the perfect outdoor environs for a major triathlon along with plenty of quality visitor accommodation and venues for a major event.

“The announcement of the World Qualification for YMMF is again great news and YMTB will continue to sponsor and work closely with the committee to attract as many athletes and visitors to the event as we can."

The Multisport, which was a finalist in the 2016 Victorian Sporting Awards for Community Sporting Event of the Year, is a major fundraiser for the Sacred Heart Primary and Secondary Schools and also assists other groups in the community.

This year’s event will be held on the 20th and 21st of October with the triathlon events being held on the Saturday and the foreshore family fun runs and Yarrawonga Health’s Corporate Challenge being held on the Sunday morning.  For more information go to www.ymmf.com.au or like the events Facebook page for updates.
